What is the point of big band night on Australian Idol? Is it to show singers versatility? Or to try and attract an older viewing demographic, or give some out of work horn players some employment?
No Idol has ever released a big band single.
I think I would prefer country and western night, or a song from a musical if no Andrew Lloyd Webber numbers were allowed.
Though if Natalie Gauci sang Cabaret, I don't think it would be a great look for her to do the Liza Minnelli suspender outfit.
It was a night where Dicko appeared in a really great cowboy shirt. In LA has he been shopping on 'Rodeo' Drive, all puns intended. Marcia showed the '80's fashion was well and truly back by showing her bra under her dress. Not a good look for anyone over 30.
Also now that Ben has gone from the show, John "Kermie" Foreman was now the butt of the gay jokes, with a "John loves a big horn section" comment from Andrew G.
Each Idol had to sing two songs tonight.
Carl Risley opened the show. He predictably picked a Michael Buble` and Harry Connick Jr numbers.
The Michael Buble` number was Me and Mrs Jones. He had the heartthrob thing going with the tie undone and the eyes staring down the camera, looking good. Then he started to sing. It was boring.
As Mark Holden said ok was not going to be good enough for Carl tonight this was his night it need to blow. It did not.
As one the papers outlined last week he is the only one in the final four who does not have a record company interested in him, and tonight would not have helped.
His Harry Connick Jr number " Just Kiss Me" was to staged, his interaction with the band was to forced. His voice is weak, and it all seemed to be a bit fast for him.
Marty Simpson was next and he really showed his lack of versatility and lack of IQ by picking two songs where the verse and the chorus was the same.
Erina in the pre song vignettes looked scathingly at him with his lack of knowledge and poor attitude towards the genre.
He did the usual well you know it was big band night, not my thing shrug the shoulders, cue goofy grin.
His first song was American baby - I wonder if he was singing it to his new 17 year old squeeze. Clearly he has moved on from little Lana. He does seem to like them young, they must be more on his wave length.
Mark Holden was spot on when he said " Just because you put horns on a song does not make it big band".
His last song was the Doors number "Light My Fire" I have heard better renditions in dodgy karaoke dens in Chinatown.
Next was the teeny bopper favourite Matt Corby who you could barely hear over the screams of the audience.
Mark was spot on again when he said his hair looked like an "Elvis hasidic jew".
Mark was on fire tonight. I also thought Matt looked a bit like Dean Geyer tonight. I almost wish he could have done a Geyer like back flip to liven the show up a bit.
He sang " How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You"
Now I thought this was a happy uplifting song, but he looked miserable throughout, like he did not want to be there. Also he had that weird hand action going on. Marty is about the only boy on Idol who does not that motion this season. Is it because he is the only one that might be getting laid?
His second song was a Bobby Darrin number "Beyond The Sea". Again this did not entertain me or my partner, as we started talking in the middle of it.
Conversation went something like this:
Partner (Male) : He does not appear to have much in his pants.
Me (Female): Black is slimming you know.
Partner: You reckon, sure it's not a camel toe?
Me: Are you saying he is more Quah (Family first todger flasher) then the winger from Manly on the Fox Sport News fuck up? (he was a Ohmigod that thing cannot be real, he should audition for Puppetry of the Penis).
Cue end of song wait for judges comments. To think I have the gall to call people banal!
The final singer for the night was Natalie Gauci, who apparently has been singing jazz since a young age and it showed. She was the standout for the night.
Tonight her father was in the audience cheering her along, he looks very young.
Has anyone found out if he is gay?
Her first song was Orange Coloured Sky, which was great, however Kyle was right she must suffer from "clothesorexia" where she looks in the mirror thinks she looks great but really it does not suit her. I thought she looked ok from the chest up.
She needs to stay out of the '80 fashions, it barely suits anyone, and definitely not her. The dress at the front was far to short you could see her mid thigh, and her legs are not her best asset.
Run from Sheridan Tyler Natalie, run. While Kyle is handing out fashion advice he should have a word to Marcia who must also have been styled by Sheridan tonight.
The sleeveless dress, with the black bra showing made her look bigger then a Williams sister, and that is hard.
Natalie's second song was an Ella Fitzgerald number "How High Is the Moon". It was sensational, and the best skatting seen on Aust Idol in five seasons.
Even her dress was ok, especially from the waist up. I am still undecided about the rest of it.
Mark Holden gave her a deserved touchdown. Kyle made the perceptive comment of how touchdowns were now turning into feelups. This year he does tend to run over to the Idols once he has given one, like he is Jesus anointing a disciple.
I don't think Marty or Carl would have drawn any new fans tonight, so they will be fighting to stay in. I think Marty to go but I say that every week.

Reality Tidbits
Dean Geyer needs four months lesson before acting on Neighbours.
Dean Geyer is going to become a cast member on neighbours. In an article today it was revealed Dean would be going to Ramsey St.
I don't think we are going to see Dean winning an oscar anytime soon, as the article revealed he needed four months of acting lessons prior to joining the cast. I did not think it was a prerequisite for cast members to actually act.
I would like to know who is advising him on this career move, or was it his only option.
I would have thought with his great looks, musical talent, and by dating a Veronica that he would have tried to further his singing career, even if it meant targeting the Christian Pop audience which is so huge in the States.
Neighbours is in it death throes in Australia, with extremely poor ratings, it continues because the money they make selling it overseas.
Maybe Neighbour producers want to see if they can cash in on the Australian Idol teeny bopper fan base. I can only presume Dean wants to get some sort of profile in England and do the Kylie, Natalie, and Delta path?
Dancing With Stars dancers audition for So You Think You Can Dance.
After being voted off early in Season 7 of Dancing With The Stars, Csaba Szirmai who partnered Corinne Grant, has auditioned yesterday in Sydney for Australia's version of Dancing With the Stars.
He auditioned with a fellow Dancing With the Stars competitor, Eliza Campagna, who was first voted off this season when partnering Michael Klim.
The 120 who successfully make it through this weekends auditions, will then 'audition' again in front of the show's judges Bonnie Lythgoe, Matthew Lee, and Jason Coleman on Tuesday and Wednesday.
I'm presuming Csaba and Eliza made it through to front the judges. It will be interesting to see how they go, and if they make it to the top 20 will it give them an advantage because of the fans they may have made on Dancing With the Stars.
Personally I am hoping to see some undiscovered talent on this show.
American Idol to Be screened on Fox 8
Goods new for reality tv fans who were getting worried about the post xmas non ratings period lull.
Fox 8 has revealed it will be screening this seasons American Idol almost live from the States, starting in mid January. Reality Raver will be covering the show on this blog.
Cannot wait to see if Paula"the lush" Abdul is putting vodka in here water glass, and if Simon Cowell is still flirting with Ryan Seacrest.

Australian So You Think You Can Dance Auditions in Sydney This Weekend
So You Think You Can Dance audition train has hit Sydney this weekend. It is at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, hopefully the people queuing are not getting too soaked.
More info on audition process here.
The judges are Bonnie Lythgoe, she was a judge in the American version on So You Think You Can Dance, however did not make it to the second season as a judge, but was still a producer. Was this when their marriage started falling apart?
I think she is great already.
Matt Lee and Jason Coleman - A quick Q&A about them is on Channel 10 website . Never heard of these do, however I hope they are not a pair of bitchy queens. There should only be one on these shows.
The Adelaide auditions put a handful of dancers through to Sydney (which is Australia's equivalent of getting through to Vegas) and five more through after the afternoon choreography sessions. So Adelaide may just reach double figures in their representation.
Photos from Melbourne, perth, and brisbane. Looks like a weird and wonderful bunch, cannot wait to see the actual footage.
Go Sydney I hope the dancers do really well.

So You Think You Can Dance - Final 6
Just as the American So You Think You Can Dance is about to finish. The Australian one is just beginning.
This weekend the auditions hit Sydney, and this will be the city they will expect to give them a lot of talent.
I have decided I already like Bonnie Lythgoe, after an article I read in the Sun Herald. She was full and frank about her separation from head honcho Nigel Lythgoe.
To summarise what she said, as I interpreted it:
You go girl I now bequeath you are the No 1 member of the "I am no longer an invisible wife" club, what a way to make plastic Priscilla Presley worried. Last item I read was that Nigel and Priscilla had been making out in a restaurant. I don't mean to be ageist but that is just wrong.
The first part of tonight's episode was filler where they showed more audition pieces that supposedly had not been shown before. The gay tap dancing cowboy was a highlight. However it does raise the issue of whether TV shows such as this and Idol should exploit people auditioning who have obvious mental health issues.
Frank was one such case. He claimed to be a geneticist, and the highlight of his life was Anna-Nicole coming to his 25th birthday party.
Then he went onto say he still spoke to her. Obviously was more then just kooky. I don't see any value in havingpeople like this shown for their so called comic value. The producers are just mocking them.
To give the judges credit they did handle the situation sensitively. If Simon Cowell, or Mark Holden had been in the same scenario I think it would have been ugly.
Cat Deeley wore a sequin mini number, but appeared to be channelling Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan with some very bad roots. These had disappeared by the elimination episode.
The guest judge tonight was Debbie Allen, who I thought would again be trying to plug her Debbie Allen Dance Academy, however I only heard it once. Maybe she did not want to be trapped handing out another scholarship like the one to Cedric.
Lacey & Pasha were paired up to do a Hip Hop number with Lacey a mannequin. It was so controlled. I thought they both did a brilliant job and it was my second favourite dance of the night. I think Lacey is going to be hard to beat.
Danny & Laura did a Mia Michaels contemporary number. Which as usual was to a high standard, however I did not think it showed off Danny's dancing enough. The dance was to a Celine Dion number with a lot of running around it ended in a titanicesque moment with them leaning over a balcony.
Neil & Sabre dance the best routine of the night with a Jazz number. It was oh so '80's, and reminded me of a sexed up Thomas Dolby video clip. When Neil did that plange over Sabre on the table my stomach dropped. It was soooooo sexy and intense.
Neil flew under the radar with me for most of the series but once he stopped partnering Lauren I thought he has been hot, hot, hot.
Lacey & Pasha second dance was the smooth waltz. I call this the death dance, as most people get eliminated after these routines, as there is no pizazz type moves that make people pick up the phone to vote. Yes it was lovely and they looked fabulous together. The song ended with their heads together, I surprised Lacey did not attempt to try and go for the snog! Pasha is so gorgeous.
Danny & Lauren danced a disco number, again I did not think it showed off Danny's talent. It was a fun number, but I have seen better disco this season. Lauren annoys me as her facial expression never changes throughout the routine. If she does not win she should go for some sort of toothpaste endorsement as her teeth are so blindingly white.
Last up were Neil and Sabre dancing the Pase Doble. Neil was like a gothic matador in black leather pants, and Sabre was in a fire engine read flamenco type outfit. Needless to say she looked wonderful.
The ending was sensational when she fell down his body to the floor. Her gymnastic training has meant she has done some wonderful original moves this season.
The elimination episode showed Lil C and his posse do some krumping straight from South Central 'hood. To me it is all poses mainly to do with crotch grabbing and pulling to big jeans up. I think I prefer traditional hip hop more.
First girl into the finale was Lacey, and first boy was Danny, ironic that last year her brother was the winner, and Danny's brother was the runner-up.
Then they did this weird clear the studio thing as the show was not live, and they did not want who had won leaked. So when Lauren was told she was eliminated it was only the gaffer clapping. So in a difficult moment for Lauren there were no fans able to cheer for her and boost her ego.
Again the same was for Pasha. Clearly he was a favourite with the ladies, whilst Mary was bawling, Cat was mauling him. You go girl.
Final four are Lacey, Sabre, Neil, and Danny. It is interesting this year as I don't think there is not clear winner as Benji was last year. If I had to make a bet I would say Lacey, but if I was voting I would be voting for Neil.

To summarise what she said, as I interpreted it:
- When she was a judge on Season 1 she felt she could not be herself and was stifled;
- Nigel is a workaholic and it was good to be out of his shadow;
- She auditioned for the Australian show and won it herself (not sure about that claim);
- Nigel is admiring the new independent Bonnie; and calls her five times a day.

Come on Tarasai tells us what you really think
Tarasai yesterday made sure she made further enemies by venting about Natalie Gauci, Daniel Mifsud, and Marcia. article here
Fake Tarasai was calling Marcia fake, and also she was a hypocrite. Maybe we need the queen of fake Paris Hilton to adjudicate on this one.
Tarasai said that Marcia had come back stage to say she had always thought she was real, however the next day Marcia went on Dicko's radio program and said she thought Tarasai was fake.
For most viewers we have always known Marcia's " I really dug it act" even after someone had murdered a Whitney number was fake. She just never had the guts to give a genuine critique of the Idol's performances. After five seasons of putting up with her lameness I have had enough.
I propose sack Marcia and bring in mini me Tarasai. At least she will be the fountain of truth.
Also it would be a way of the Producers of Idol, to say thank you for Tarasai actually bringing some zing back into this seasons lacklustre show.

Farmer Wants a Wife - Episode 2
Clearly the drought is hitting the Australian farmers hard at the moment, as they seem to be utilising their spare time to go on this tacky TV show The Farmer Takes A Wife.
The premise is six farmers are on the show to find a wife. Channel Nine have crossed the SBS program "Desperately Seeking Sheila" and the US show "The Bachelor". However they have spent 10% of the other shows budget to produce the show.
Last week the six farmers posted their profiles on the internet, the girls sent in their applications and they picked 10 girls each to do speed dating with.
They were then to choose five girls each to go on a "proper" group date with, which they would then whittle down to two to take on the farm for 10 days.
I was hoping to see Jacinta Tynan on the show at least if she got a boyfriend it may change the whinging "no one is good enough for me" tone in her weekly Sunday Telegraph column.
Brad 30 who describes himself as a sensitive new age farmer took his five ladies to wine tasting tour of the Hunter Valley. "He would really like someone to share his journey with."Now this guy had been reading to many self help books. His bedtime reading must have been How to Improve Your Emotional IQ and Men are for Mars, and Ladies are from Venus. He also listed about 20 things he is looking for in a woman - which no one can fill. Clearly he has a touch of the Jacinta's as well.
After stating he wants a meeting of the mines he then honed in straight away on the blonde bimbette flight attendant Chantel. Clearly when it gets down to it men to prefer blondes...
She giggled and simpered and said farm life could be fun. She has been reading to many articles on her mentor Katrina Rowntree being engaged to a Victorian farmer.
However as the show progressed, I seriously started worrying about Brad's mental health. Did Channel 9 psych test this guy prior putting him on the show? There is no way I would be going to an isolated farm with this bloke. Chantel who clearly was not as dumb as she looked was clearly getting the psycho vibe and gave him the "its not you but me" speech when it was clearly "its not me but you" vibe. She told him she was not interested in a farmstay.
He tried to stop his eyes spinning with craziness as he expressed his disappointed to the shows host Natalie (I cannot spell her last name but she is from Getaway) who was looking horrified as she interviewed him.
He then picked Melanie - a social worker, and Jane an exec assistant, who were both thrilled to be selected. However the previews for next week shows that it gets ugly with Brad down on the farm. I hope they removed his rifles prior to their arrival.
Just found his bio he said he reads about spirituality and personal development (could tell that, needs to read more fiction) and also belongs to men's groups. It just gets worse. His bio his here http://channelnine.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=265310
Chris 30 from Tamworth who describes himself as a shy guy, got to take his five girls on a harbour cruise. This guy to had crazy eyes not in a psycho way, but in a I am so desperate I have not been with a gal in years kind of look. He was a puppy dog just so eager to please.
I was surprised none of the girls dived over board to swim away as fast as possible. This obviously shows that the hetero male situation in Sydney is at crisis point.
He really clicked with Kimberley a disability support worker, who he picked, and Jocelyn a lawyer which was the first I had seen of her in the whole episode.
This is a criticism I have of the show it kept chopping and changing so you were not able to get to see/know much of the guys let alone the girls. So it was hard to feel either excited or disappointed or in Brad's case relieved for them.
The last we see of Chris is clutching flowers at Tamworth airport waiting for his ladies to alight. This guy seems a bit simple.
Gus 32 a sixth generation cotton farmer (therefore loaded) is described as cool and confident. He is a foodie and apparently a good cook. He did seem a bit more sophisticated then the others. Also I was impressed with his finesse in making a bed - his skills put mine to shame.
He got to take his girls out for a nice lunch in a top restaurant in Sydney. He at least seemed to be able to hold a conversation, but he did have private school boy written all over him. Also he was about the only one who did not have a clear favourite girl.
He picked Brooke the quarantine officer, and Julie the dental hygienist to be his farmstay girls for the ten days.
Drew 32 from Mudgee describes himself as a lovable larrikin. He got to get up close and personal with his ladies by salsa dancing.
He honed in a Natalie, a scientist, a quiet shy type clearly thinking she is so quiet she must be thinking profound thoughts. He took her aside to the bar, and here she had the big opportunity to make her move, and she just stood their like a mute. Apparently she was not enjoying the salsa as she did not like the touching thing. He struggled to make conversation and she did not get picked.
Outgoing Tash a recoveries officer did, and Susie a communications manager, again I had seen nothing of her prior to her being picked.
Craig 27 describes himself as a dinky di farmer, he came across as laconic (a nice way of saying thick). He took the girls ice skating and zoomed in on Christy, a petite but buxom, outgoing girl. Interestingly enough they never showed her occupation. So either unemployed, stripper, or works for Channel 9.
The was much bitching about her from the other girls. They then all went to a clairvoyant who looked pretty hopeless as did not tell him which girl he would end up with. I thought they were able to predict the future?
In a shock move he did not pick Christy, but Erin a 24 year old single mum, and Deanna. A warning for these girls he had his mum cleaning the house for him. Maybe he would be better sticking with a russian bride.
Jon a rice farmer who is into commitment got a great date where he got to take his five ladies to a day spa. He had the advantage of checking out their bodies prior to picking two of them. He got very little tv time so had no idea what he was like but he did appear sane and quite cute, his bio however is a bit boring. None of them appear to read.
He appeared to click with Jodie a nurse from Sydney and Meika a student nurse. So has a nursing fetish, or just wants someone to look after him. Hopefully we will get to see more of him next week.
The next episode will have the Jack Thompson type scenario where 2 women will be living with one man and sharing him. Hopefully this will bring out the bitchiness in them as this always makes good tv.
Prediction: an intervention will need to be staged at Brad's place.
